Those tiny white glitters seem ever more numerous. So many factors can explain a flare-up of dandruff, from what you eat to how often you wash your hair. There could be N number of reasons for dandruff. Maybe due to dust, dirt and dandruff can accumulate. But in this article, I have mentioned a few reasons why it can happen. Read the whole article to know more, and some known Dermatologists have noted some other points.
Sensitive to fungi from one’s hair
Contrary to what is often believed, dandruff is not caused by dry skin. The real culprit: the overabundance of a yeast called pityrosporum ovale. This yeast feeds on body oils, which may explain why oily scalps are more sensitive to dandruff.
“Some people, who make an oil that is particularly welcoming to these yeasts, end up with it overnight,” says Robert T. Brodell, a professor and chair in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi.
Typically, mild cases of dandruff respond well to self-medication, so feel free to use these home remedies or buy over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoos that will start working in about two weeks.
Dandruff may be a sign that you need to relax. “Stress can make any skin condition worse,” says Lotika Singh, a dermatologist from New York. Stress weakens your immune system and can cause dandruff flare-ups. “And it’s worse when they’re irritating,” she adds.
In addition, stress can trigger an itch-scratch cycle: the more the patient scratches, the more itched.” Instead, try yoga, a daily walk, or deep breathing (inhale by counting to four, hold your breath by counting to four, exhale by counting to four).
Do not wash (or rinse) your hair enough
Some people assure us that frequent washing can strip our hair of the oils they need. But these oils can also serve as a natural incubator for dandruff. “Dandruff can form when there is a buildup of oil, sebum or sweat on the scalp,” says Dr Brodell. Take tea tree oil shampoos, which studies have shown to combat dandruff effectively. And take care to rinse the shampoo well: the remnants of residue can create a suitable ground for oval pityrosporum.
Having a Poor Diet can lead to Dandruff
No one will be surprised to learn that healthy skin and hair can only flourish on a healthy body. Without going so far as to say that a bad diet can be responsible for its appearance of it, experts believe that some foods can cause flare-ups, especially if you are already prone to it.
Whenever possible, try to consume healthier monounsaturated fatty acids. Avocados, nuts, olives and safflower oil are excellent sources. A deficiency of vitamin B, which contains biotin (the nutrient that underpins hair cells), can also exacerbate symptoms. Eat vitamin B foods like oatmeal, rice, eggs, and bananas.
Abusing Styling Products can Lead to Dandruff
The use of thick ointments or certain oils can aggravate dandruff. “Yeasts feed on lipids and can proliferate in their presence,” says Dr Singh. Also, reduce hair sprays, styling gels and foams as much as possible. These styling products can accumulate on your hair and scalp and produce a fatty base.
